The second segment of the module will trace the historical development, structure, and function of the global political economy. The theoretical framework will include a brief introduction to the national income accounting and the balance of payments, the determination of exchange rates, and different exchange rate regimes. Further, we will employ this theory to better understand the historical evolution of the International Monetary System and the role of the International Financial Institutions in the global political economy. In the first segment of the module, we will examine some of the major scholarly contributions to political and economic theory and thought.
When Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses on the church door at Wittenberg, he offered a challenge to the dominant establishment of which he was a member. In this provocative book, political scientist Anne Norton proposes 95 theses that launch a brilliant, witty polemic against the reigning orthodoxies in her own field. Rejecting the antiquated and stultifying models encountered in textbooks and in courses on methodology and championed by the self-appointed gatekeepers of a narrow and parochial political science, Norton opens the gates to new practices, new principles, new questions, more methods, and more demanding ethical and scientific criteria. Drawing on the most daring and rigorous work in structuralism, poststructuralism, postcolonialism, cultural studies, literary theory, institutional analysis, and the philosophy of science, she offers practical advice for students of politics, culture, and method. It will also explore some of the important critiques of human rights from Marxist and postcolonial perspectives.

This study attempts to explore the disparity in Bangali and ethnic political cultures in Bangladesh. Methodologically, Barishal Sadar and a village under this Upazila and a para of Rakhine community at Kalapara thana in Patuakhali district were taken as a case study to conduct an analysis of the disparity of political cultures between ethnic and Bangali communities in Bangladesh. It is observed from the analysis that there is a huge disparity between Rakhine and Bangali political cultures except in certain cases. In every case, Bangali people behave subjective and participative in communication with political issues, whereas Rakhine people behave parochially except on the question of objectives of the government, political parties and political rights in this regard. It is also observed that no specific political culture exists in Bangali communities, but the Rakhine community behaves parochially in every case.
Mass media and formal schooling makes it much more likely that people can identify with groups as large as those encompassed by modern nation-states. World religions disseminate and enforce common languages, symbols, and rituals which can forge large populations into a single in-group . These social techniques permit the creation of new in-groups that may have never been possible before. Third, the most salient in-group category can change quickly based on local practices and contexts. Among Enga horticulturalists in Papua New Guinea, rituals aimed at dehumanizing members of another group can swiftly recast allies as enemies , and among the Nuer of Sudan, changing patterns of competition over resources can re-align in-groups and out-groups (Evans-Pritchard, 1940).
They may be written, broadcast, performed, curated, made, or involve any other kind of appropriately documented submission. Students will be introduced to the major theoretical frameworks for understanding state compliance with human rights obligations using both historical and comparative approaches to the topic. We will focus on particular case examples and general cross-national comparisons in the effort to understand why states commit violations. The last segment of the module examines the origins and nature of global trade integration with a particular emphasis on the experience of developing countries in the global economy. Key topics include the debate on trade and development, trade liberalisation, the structure and function of the International Trading System, trade policies and development strategies, political economy of Foreign Direct Investment and the impact of Transnational Corporations.
- The dissertation comprises a critical review of the literature and/or original analysis of documentary and/or other evidence on a chosen topic within the fields of your programme.
- From the perspective of neurobiology, cross-population variability provides an opportunity to establish and distinguish those aspects of human brains and psychology that are reliably developing products of pan-human genes from those that depend on particular culturally-constructed niches (e.g., institutions) or ecological conditions.
- It may also engender apathy and undermine interest in conventional forms of political activity such as voting and party membership.
- Examine a range of material practices and strategies which, in the encounter between art and politics, play out in numerous forms and very different kinds of social spaces.
It is an example of Ken’s masterful way with elision that he has made us believe that the king’s evil advisers wish to prevent him from contesting the position of mayor of London. The whole issue, of course, is whether he should be the Labour candidate; that is the right that he is fighting for. If you were up against someone who wielded semi-divine authority, and whose status in public eyes was beyond criticism, the technique was to shift the blame onto those around them.

No less important was the deliberate manipulation of history and the use of rumor and innuendo, symbol and pageantry, persecution and reward. It was this mix that made people both accept and reject the MCP regime, sometimes simultaneously. The role and behaviour of both political and officer leaders is key to a healthy local democracy. When they model poor or ineffective leadership behaviours, this can be detrimental to a local authority’s overall culture and governance. Perhaps unsurprisingly, at the point of both statutory inspection and non-statutory intervention, leadership failings, at corporate as well as political level, have been identified as a key issue.

If you need assistance with your English language, we offer a range of courses that can help prepare you for postgraduate-level study. You might also be considered for some programmes if you aren’t a graduate or your degree is in an unrelated field, but have relevant experience and can show that you have the ability to work at postgraduate level. You should have an undergraduate degree of at least upper second class standard in a relevant/related subject. While at Goldsmiths, I worked at the Imperial War Museum and at the cultural agency Culture+Conflict, both of which were incredibly formative experiences. I have also been writing freelance criticism for Artforum, ArtAsiaPacific, frieze, and other publications.
